Karlstad Airport was inaugurated in 1944 and was then located a few kilometers from Karlstad Center.
In 1997, the airport moved to its current location about 18 kilometers northwest of Karlstad.

Lowest available altitude in CTR is 1000 ft AMSL, except for
take-off and landing.
ATS may permit lower altitude for aerobatic flight within CTR between 0900-2100 (0800-2000).

The traffic circuit should normally be flown west of the
aerodrome.

Repeated take-offs and landings shall be flown in the traffic circuit west of the runway. In case of simultaneous glider operations the traffic circuit can be flown east of the runway.

Repeated take-off and landings permitted only
15 JUN-15 AUG MON-FRI 0800-1700 (0700-1600) and
16 AUG-14 JUN MON-FRI 0600-2000 (0500-1900) also
SAT, SUN and HOL 0800-1600 (0700-1500).
Repeated take-off and landings are not permitted,
Good Friday, Easter Eve, Easter Day, Ascension Day, Whitesun
Eve, National Day, Midsummer Eve, All Saints Day,
Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.

4. Parking of aircraft on Apron S only when the
aerodrome is closed.

5. Malfunctioning stopbar When a stopbar is not
controllable the following procedures apply:

5.1 Taxiway with operational stopbar manoeuvring will
be used. Taxiway with unseviceable manoeuvring function
will be closed.
 
5.2 When using taxiway with malfunctioning stopbar
manoeuvring, taxiing pass a lighted stopbar is only permitted
behind a marshalling car. ATC will inform via clearance.

Low visibility procedures (LVP) established
LVP will be in force when RVR is below 550 m or ceiling or
vertical visibility is below 200 ft.

When LVP is applied one aircraft or vehicles are allowed in
the manoeuvring area.

When LVP is in force, aircraft parked at apron N shall use
TWY N when taxiing and aircraft parked at apron S shall use
TWY S when taxiing, if conditions permits.

Seaplane base

CTR
Continuous two-way radiocommunication required in CTR.
CTR established during hours of TWR.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
1. Downdraft may occur on final RWY 21.

2. Reduced runway separation is applied in
accordance with AIP AD 1.1 para 10.
 
3. Credit card required for payment of airport fee,
refuelling etc. Information about accepted cards available via
the operations department.

4. Glider strip parallell to RWY 03 left side 600x50 m
not maintained by Karlstad Airport.

5. Magnetic disturbances may occur on apron, mostly
on stand 4, 5 and 6.

6. An ambulance helicopter is located at the airport.
Delays may occur (ref AIP ENR 1-1 para 13).

7. Exemptions from requirements in CS ADR-DSN:
Turnpads are not designed for the longest code E aircraft,
more information O/R.

Aerodrome restrictions
1. Running of engines
Multi engined aircraft should, if possible, shut down one or
more engines before entering apron. Aircraft should use
minimum thrust required during engine start and taxiing.
Permission for ground running must be obtained from the
airport authorities PH +46(0)708 - 55 60 34.
Such request may also be forwarded via ATC on channel 119.455 if necessary.
For extensive engine ground running, request may be denied
or restrictions be applied (aircraft to be directed to an other
location on the aerodrome etc).

2. APU
APU may only be used when required for engine start or
adjustment of cabin heat. APU must not be started earlier
than 5 minutes before estimated time of departure. Exception
may occasionally be permitted in case of GPU failure or
when the outside temperature exceeds 25°C and air can not
otherwise be circulated in the cabin.
 
3. Over built up areas
The routes for inbound and outbound IFR and VFR traffic
have been established also for noise abatment purposes.
Aircraft shall strictly adhere to assigned route and be
operated in such a manner that unnecessary noice
disturbances are not caused.

Departing traffic with MTOM exceeding 5700 kg not following
SID; Climb straight ahead to 2500 ft before turn is initiated.

Noise sensitive areas marked on ESOK 6–1 shall be avoided
below 2500 ft AMSL (valid also when ATS is closed).

4. Arriving traffic
Aircraft with MTOM exceeding 5700 kg shall maintain 2500 ft
until on final.

Communication failure
1. SQUAWK 7600
2. Enter CTR via FAGERAS-Holding WEST at or below 1000 ft AMSL to traffic circuit.
Transmit blind your intentions.
3. Flash LDG-lights and watch TWR for optical signals.

Book an airport bus at least two hours before departure from Karlstad Airport and at least one hour before landing in Karlstad. The airport bus leaves for Karlstad Centrum about 15 minutes after landing.
